Michael de la Legh was born about 1230.   The Abbot of Newboe his granted to Michael de la Legh certain lands inExtwistle. The original grant is now in the Towneley file at Lancashire Record Office. This charter without date only shows he existed and indicates that later members of thefamily held this land in Extwistle. Other records show he witnessed a charter of Abbot Adam (between 1249 and 1259) and was allowed pasturage in Cliviger by Abbot Henry (between 1280 and 1284) Richard de Towneley married Ellena. They had a son, John Towneley born 1350.

John de Towneley was born 1350 and died in 1399. He married Isabel Rixton 1382. They had a son, Richard Towneley, born 14 May 1387 in Stydd Chapel, Dutton. 

Richard Towneley born 14 May 1387 in Stydd Chapel, Dutton. His parents were John de Towneley and Isabell Rizton. He died 30 September 1454 His wife was Alice. They had a son, John Towneley 1st of Barnside, born 1415.
