James
W. Carter enlisted in the 11th Georgia Volunteers, Company E, in Morgan
County Georgia on 24 June, 1861 for the war, by Captain Dobbs. Company
E was previously known as the Fannin Young Riflemen (of Fannin County).
He
was sent to the hospital in Richmond, Virginia on 5 October 1861 by a
Surgeon's certificate. James was discharged on 9 November 1861 in
Richmond, Virginia by Surgeon's certificate of disability. Records show
he was paid for benefits in service at that time. Signed by O. T,
Taylor. Our information is, he always had to use a
cane when walking and therefore assume he had sustained a leg or
foot injury.
Of interest was the amount of
pay: $11.00 per month
shown in the Quarter master's accounting: . Total
pay received at time of discharge was $48.40 for four months and
12 days; clothing
$25.00, by Act of Congress; travel pay $1.15 and a deduction of
$2.50 for
clothing (one blanket ) overdrawn. Total
pay received: $72.05.
Remarks were:
Discharged at General Hospital "without further settlement," and
had in his possession a haversack one blanket, and a canteen.
He was listed on the Roll in Walker County, Alabama for a pension, 11 November 1911. Wife listed as Laura Eades. Pension was $30..00 a month. |

operated a small grocery/general store in Townly, Walker County, Alabama.
James W. Carter was born 3 May 1848 and died 13 Feb 1927. His wife, Laura Victoria Eades Carter, was born June 1850 and died 11 December 1927. They are interred in Bennett Cemetery, near Jasper, Alabama.
