The 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment  was part of the garrison at Fort Donelson until the battle  and surrender of the Fort on 16 February 1862. The majority of the Confederate troops were taken as prisoners to different points in the in the north; officers to Fort Warren in Massachusetts and Johnson's Island, Illinois and most enlisted sent to  Camp Douglass, Illinois. Some prisoners were exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Carter, D. C. (David Cater), Private, Company C Infantry, had no record until January 27, 1864 Muster Roll listed as present; on March/ April 1864 Muster Roll as present. Originally, enlisted at age 27 as a Private in Company D 46th Alabama Infantry, CSA at Loachapoka, Alabama on April 12, 1862. David Cater Carter was born December 14, 1835 in Georgia and died on either March 28 1915, or March 18, 1916. in Tallahoosa, Alabama. Husband of Mary M. and Nancy P. (Bonner) Carter, 1860, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.  Alabama Pension, Tallapoosa County, Alabama approved.

Carter, James Jenkins, Private, Company C Infantry, was age 37 when he enlisted on 13 September 1861.  He was absent with leave when the surrender occurred at Fort Donellson, Tennessee. In a muster on 1 August 1962 Carter was listed as absent with leave and wounded during his absence. We have no further information concerning his service record. James was born October 24, 1824 and died  September 6, 1906. He is interred  in Tallapoosa, Alabama. He was the husband of Cynthia Matilda Davis Carter, 1840 Tallapoosa County, Alabama.

Carter, John, Private, Company C Infantry, was age 20 when enlisting  on 13 September 1861 at Montgomery, Alabama, a POW at Fort Donellson, Tennessee 16 February 1862.  Sent to prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois and admitted to USA Prison Hospital, Ca,p Douglas, Illinois on 1 May 1862 with pneumonia and died there on 13 May 1862. Carter was buried  in the Chicago City Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois removed and re interred in the Confederate Mound, Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. John was the son of Hezekiah and Margaret Carter.

Carter, William Jasper, Private/3 Corporal/2 Corporal,  was age 24 when he enlisted 13 September 1861 at Montgomery, Alabama. He was promoted to Corporal 3rd January 1, 1862 was a captured POW 16 February 1862, at Fort Donelson, Tennessee and sent to prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois. He was sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi 5 September 1862 to be exchanged. He was a POW received on board steamer Hon. H. Done near Vicksburg, Mississippi 20 September 1862. Carter was promoted to Corporal 2nd, 23 September 1862. On 31 October  1862 and 12 February 1863 he was listed as absent, sick at Clinton, Mississippi and on March-April Muster Roll as present. He was paroled at Talladega, Alabama on 3 May 1865. William Jasper Carter was born 14 May 1837 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and died after 1907.  He was the husband of Elizabeth P. Carter.
