There are several known spellings of the Brandow surname: Brandaw, Brandau, Brando, (sometimes) Brandon

Johann Wilhelm Brandau married Maria Elizabeetha Catharina/Carharuse Reuter, March 1705 in Germany. Maria was born in1688 in Rotterdam, Holland. Johann was born in 1679 in Pfaltz, Bayern, Germany. He emigrated 21 June 1709 from Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands, with his wife and three children, to New York, New York, aboard Capt. Robert Bulman's ship, the Rotterdam. He was naturalized, 8 September 1715 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. He died Dec. 1747 in Amsterdam, New York. The Brandau family was originally French. They were driven from France by religious persecution and went for refuge to the Palatinate of Germany, an old province on the Rhine River. They were Huguenots. The Palatinate was overrun and thousands fled to England. Johann was a baker by trade in London, England in 1709. The Brandau family settled in West Camp, New York and had four more boys.

Nicholas Brandau born 4 August 1710 in Bayern, Germany and died in 1770 in Greene County, New York. He arrived in New York in 1715. He married Anna Elizabeth Kline on 7 Nov 1726 in Kingston, Greene Co., She was born 4 January 1704 in Hachenburg, Westerwaldkreis, Rheineland-Pfalz, Germany. She arrived in NY in 1710. Her parents were Hieronymus Klyn and Anna Maria Klyn.

Hieronymus Brandow, was born 31 October 1729 at West Camp, Ulster, New York He died 17 November 1812 Catskill, Greene County, New York. married Annatje Lehmann in 1754 Catskill, Greene Co., NY

Hendricus Brandow married Elizabeth Steenberg 1781. Chenango, Greene Co., NY

William Brandow¹ ² was born about 1801 in New York. The 1866 Greene County, NY census states born in Ulster Co. Also, states he has been a resident of only 7 years, I think he left Greene Co., and came back. Most of his children were born in Greene Co, NY. He married Margaret DeMott in the Dutch Reformed Church, Catskill, Greene County, New York William died 15 March 1866 in Athens, Greene County, NY with out a will.
Margaret^3,4 filed a Petition for Letters of Administration in the Greene County Surrogates Court, May 1, 1866, which names his children and grandchildren.

Day age 34, wife of John Day; Lewis Brandow age 28, Alonzo Brandow age 22, and Charles Brandow. William, Catherine and Harriet are residing in Athens, NY. Lewis, Alonzo and Charles are living in New York City, NY.

Also, Ann Mavin Brandow, deceased daughter who is the wife of Nicholas Van Dyke. Grandchildren: William Van Dyke, Janus Van Dyke, George Van Dyke and Charles Van Dyke, residing with their father.

Harriet Ella Brandow born 1832, Athens, Greene Co., NY died 17 August 1894, New York, NY and buried 19 August 1894 Athens Rural Cemetery, Athens, NY. Section One 1A-7. Harriet married John J. Day 2 March 1850 in First Reformed Church, Athens, NY. John J. Day, son of Jarred Day and Lois Merrit was born 1827, Athens, Greene Co., NY. Died 1902 Athens, Greene Co., NY and buried Athens Rural Cemetery, Athens, NY. Section One 1A-7 . More about her in the Day section.

This states that William was born in Ulster Co., NY and he had been residing in Greene Co. for 7 years. Margaret was born in Columbia Co., NY.

Born in New York.; Margaret age 50 born in NY; William age 39 circus rider, born in NY; Lewis age 24 boatman, born in NY; Charles age 22 boatman, born in NY; Alonzo age 19, boatman born in NY. 1880 Census, Village of Athens, Greene Co, NY - Edward L. Brandow age 25 engineer on boat born in NY; Kathy wife age 21; Lillie E. age 4 and Frederick age 1; Margaret Brandow⁴ age 78, grandmother, born approximately 1802 in NY, father born in Connecticut and mother in Pennsylvania.
