Sampson Patterson of Washington County, Virginia was my (Neale's) great great uncle. He had another person -  Edmond Nichols - serve in his stead during the war. This was not an uncommon practice.

James Lowery Cole, Captain 37th Regiment, CSA

Please see the documentation above, written by James L. Cole, 1st Lt., "in the volunteer company attached to the 37th Regiment Commander, Col. Folkerson of which company George Graham is Captain, certified that Edmond Nichols has this day attached himself to said company as the substitute of Sampson Patterson - of this county - and also certifies that said Nichols is over 45 years of age, and not liable to "military" service. Given unto my hand this 17th day of August 1861, James L. Cole, 1st Lieut., Glade Springs.

James Lowery Cole, the officer mentioned above and, pictured here as a captain, was also an uncle though his marriage to Elizabeth Patterson, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Cole Patterson.
