Norfolk County Grays
A small but enthusiastic
group of ladies meets together with Jean S. Spencer and Marguerite U. Hicks,
June 19, 1987, to discuss the forming of a new United Daughters
of the Confederacy Chapter
in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The ladies decide to name
their new chapter "The Norfolk County Grays Chapter", to honor the men
from Norfolk County who fought in the War Between the States and the gray
to honor the color of their uniforms. The ladies voted the purpose
of our chapter would be "To Share The Truth Of Southern History And
To Honor Norfolk County's Roll In That History". The chapter
colors are Red and Gray. The Motto: Think, Love, Pray,
Dare and Live.
After making many plans, doing a lot of work and worry, having much correspondence with the Virginia Division and the General Organization, and especially with the help of Mrs. Martha V. Bily, President of the Virginia Division. On, September 5, 1987, we received our charter, with twenty (20) charter members. The Co-Founders of the chapter (Jean S. Spencer and Margurite U. Hicks) received the charter at the Virginia Division Convention held October 6-8, 1987, in Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Martha V. Bily, President Virginia Division, presented the charter to them. The chapter's general number is #2535 and the Virginia Division number is #208. At least one member of our Chapter has attended all district meetings, division conventions and general conventions since the chartering of the chapter.
The Charter Members were: Patricia Tyler Brown, Therese Marie Brown, Patricia Bradley Buck, Aleta Johnson Carmody, Dale Priddy Cronce, Carolina Riddle Doonan, Marguerite Belote Hicks, Genevieve Morris McNeely, Elizabeth Wright Morris (A Real Daughter), Debra Taylor Raynor, Mary Lowe Riddle, Edna Marie Silvester, Dorothy Ann Silvester, Jean Silvester Spencer, June Sinott Stewart, Sharon Kaufelt Stine, Jean Wright Suit, Betty Belote Tyler, Karen Elizabeth Tyler and Bettie Morris Young.
The Norfolk County Grays, UDC Chapter sponsors the Children of the Confederacy Chapter #830. Marguerite U. Hicks was the founder of the children's chapter. The Norfolk County Grays Juniors #830 was chartered December 31, 1987, with 25 children.
