Captain Nicholas Martiau, the "father of Yorktown,"  was in the Virginia Colony census in 1623 and lived in Elizabeth City,for a time.  Eventually he and his family settled on land which became his plantation and home , some of which later became Yorktown. He  was originally from France, and a Protestant, he is considered a Huguenot. See: Martiau genealogy

As the marker above states, Martiau and 16 members of his family were moved from their original resting places  in 1936 and reinterred in the Grace Church Cemetery, in Yorktown.
