Captain Nicholas Martiau, the "father of Yorktown," was in the Virginia Colony census in 1623 and lived in Elizabeth City,for a time. Eventually he and his family settled on land which became his plantation and home , some of which later became Yorktown. He was originally from France, and a Protestant, he is considered a Huguenot. As the marker above states, Martiau and 16 members of his family were moved from their original resting places in 1936 and reinterred in the Grace Church Cemetery, in Yorktown.
