John Hart married Rebecca ( also known as Eliza Bolling), she was a first cousin to Andrew Johnson, seventeenth President of the United States, who was partly reared in the Bolling home. It is said that Nancy Hart was born at Raleigh, North Carolina about 1843, but not proven. When Nancy was an infant her parents moved to Tazewell County, VA, then to Washington Co., VA later to Harper District, now Roane County, West Virginia. It was there Nancy lived when the Civil War broke out. Nancy's people were Southern dissidents and came under the watchful eye of neighbors and the Home Guards. Her youth and her ability to play the part of a backwoods girl made her an efficient spy and she could ride and shoot with the best of the guerrilla raiders. Nancy was said to have been born in North Carolina in 1845, but this is not certain. Del Hart thinks she was born in Virginia in 1843, the 1900 Federal Census states she was born in Virginia. The 1850 says she was age 7 and 1860 census says she was 17 which show she was born in 1843. Several newspaper articles state she was born in Raleigh, NC. One an interview with one of her relatives.
