United Daughters of the Confederacy
History and Objectives

United Daughters of the Confederacy is the outgrowth of many local memorial, monument and Confederate Home Associations, which were organized after the War Between the States.

After the War, many local groups, led by women, were organized to rehabilitate the country along with auxiliaries to Camps of Confederate Veterans. Out of these local societies, which for nearly three decades rendered untold service to the South, two Statewide organizations came into existence as early as 1890; the Daughters of the Confederacy in Missouri, and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Confederate Soldiers Home, in Tennessee. After several changes of name, United Daughters of the Confederacy was organized on September 10, 1894. United Daughters of the Confederacy is, because of its connection with the previous organizations, the oldest patriotic organization in our country.

The objectives of the organization are Historical, Educational, Benevolent, Memorial and Patriotic, to honor the memory of those who served and those who fell in the service of the Confederate States of America.

The emblem of the UDC is the five-pointed star with a cotton boll superimposed. At the tip of the points is the motto: LOVE, LIVE, PRAY, THINK, DARE.
