Snoods are crochet hair nets.  When ladies during  the Civil War wore them, they were usually dark colors.  Snoods were also made of woven ribbon.  Only young ladies in Godey's book and in Juanita Leisch's book,  "Who Wore What" were pictured wearing snoods.  Young ladies of our current era seem to like the bright colored snoods.
