Children of the Confederacy

2nd National Flag

Recognizing that the perpetuity of their own organization depended upon enlisiting the active interest of boys and girls of Confederate descent, the founders of the United Daughters of the Confederacy began early on the consider the necessity for organizing the children and the advisability of forming among them chapters similar to the parent organization. The first meeting held in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894, at the conveintion held in Baltimore in 1897, the UDC adopted a committee to form the Children of the Confederacy. The first chapter was the Mary Custis Lee Children of the Confederacy in Alexandria, Virginia, formed April 6, 1896, and named for Mrs. Robert E. Lee. The Children of the Confederacy was formed to aid and honor ex confederate soldiers in a work of love and charity.

Elizabeth Curtis Wallace Chapter #830

The Norfolk County Grays/Niemeyer Shaw  UDC Chapter sponsors a Children of The Confederacy Chapter . The Chapter was founded by Mrs. Marguerite U. Hicks. The Norfolk County Grays Juniors #830 was chartered December 31, 1987 with twenty five (25) children. The Norfolk County Grays Jr's. changed their name to Elizabeth Curtis Wallace Chapter in 2000.

Mrs. Therese M. Tomlinson is the current Director of the Elizabeth Curtis Wallace Chapter.
