Recognizing that the perpetuity of their own organization depended upon enlisting the active interest of boys and girls of Confederate descent, the founders of the United Daughters of the Confederacy began early on the consider the necessity for organizing the children and the advisability of forming among them chapters similar to the parent organization. The first meeting held in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894, at the convention held in Baltimore in 1897, the UDC adopted a committee to form the Children of the Confederacy. The first chapter was the Mary Custis Lee Children of the Confederacy in Alexandria, Virginia, formed April 6, 1896, and named for Mrs. Robert E. Lee.
